A ranking of the best states for disabled veterans released Aug. 4 put Florida atop the list by a wide margin, with Virginia and Texas rounding out the top three and Mississippi finishing dead last.

The survey by the nonprofit SmileHub used data from federal agencies, nonprofits like MOAA and AARP, and other sources to sort the states. Rankings in three categories – Health and Rehabilitation Access, Infrastructure and Community Support, and Economic Stability and Long-Term Security – were combined into an overall score to create the final list.

First reported by Military.com, the survey used a similar methodology and presentation as those conducted by WalletHub, which annually lists the best states for military retirees and the best cities for veterans. SmileHub and WalletHub are separate entities, but both were founded by WalletHub CEO Odysseas Papadimitriou.
